    Turner Prize 2011: GEORGE SHAW whose paintings, with their deeply personal juxtaposition of subject matter and material, lie intriguingly on the edge of tradition.

    Turner Prize 2011: HILARY LLOYD who combines still and moving images, sound and the three dimensional forms of AV playback equipment to portray the urban environment.

    Turner Prize 2011: KARLA BLACK who has an innovative approach to sculpture and makes substantial works made in otherwise temporary spaces and materials.

    Turner Prize 2011: MARTIN BOYCE who holds the viewer with atmospheric sculptural installations, combining references to design history and text, marked by a subtle attention to detail.

Turner Prize 2011

This year the Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious for contemporary art, is being organised by BALTIC. It is the first time the Prize has been presented outside of Tate in its 27 year history. Established in 1984 to celebrate new developments in contemporary art, the Prize is awarded each year to a British artist under fifty for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the twelve months preceding.

Additional Information

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Channel 4’s association with the Turner Prize. Channel 4 is sponsoring the prize fund of £40,000 and a dedicated programme featuring the live announcement of the winner will be broadcast live on 5 December 2011. A series of short films about the shortlisted artists will feature on Channel 4 as well as additional programming on More4. 

This year’s shortlisted artists whose work will make up the exhibition are Karla Black, Martin Boyce, Hilary Lloyd and George Shaw.
