Julian Opie

13 July 2002 - 13 October 2002

As part of B.OPEN – BALTIC’s inaugural exhibition, Julian Opie has been commissioned to make new work for both inside and outside of the building. Opie has adorned the Level 2 art space and Level 5 Viewing Box, as well as the two glass boxes outside BALTIC on each side of the Millennium Bridge, with outlines of human bodies.

Additional Information

These figures, represented in Opie’s distinctive graphic style as simple silhouettes in black vinyl – one male, one female – are positioned opposite one another and sometimes together on the gallery walls and surfaces on Levels 2 and 5 as well as on opposite banks of the River Tyne.

To mark the opening of BALTIC a selection of road signs from Opie’s series Escaped Animals will be placed outside galleries throughout the UK. These animals will be symbolically ‘pointing the way to BALTIC’ throughout the summer months.
