Spencer Tunick

New York-based contemporary artist Spencer Tunick presents the images from his large scale UK installation that took place on 17 July 2005 in Newcastle and Gateshead. These breathtaking works capture 1,700 unclothed participants in various formations along the Newcastle Gateshead Quays.
This exhibition is the first opportunity to see the results of the much talked about Spencer Tunick installation, which took place in NewcastleGateshead on 17 July 2005 and attracted 1700 people prepared to bare all for art.
The American artist's largest UK project to date comes 12 years after his first nude installation - featuring 28 naked bodies lying in front of the United Nations building in New York. His North East project was set against the striking backdrop of NewcastleGateshead Quays.
Additional Information
Tunick works directly with the urban landscape in a very personal style; using the nude body as a raw material to intervene and transform a chosen site, and then documenting the events with photography and video. He is widely celebrated for his elaborately posed photographs of nude figures in public settings. His installations have taken place across the globe in cities including Montreal, Melbourne, Santiago, Barcelona and Lyon. The artist gathers hundreds of volunteers for each project and has, at any one time, attracted from 500 - 7000 participants.
The photographic prints on display at BALTIC will record the 2005 installation at five locations; Newcastle Quayside, Gateshead Millennium Bridge, The Side, South Shore Road and Mill Road Car Park. The sculptural mass of bodies transforms the familiar landscapes, creating a poetic whole which challenges traditionally held views on nudity and privacy as well as social and political issues surrounding art in the public sphere.
Elements of the installation formed part of BBC THREE’s Naked City: Spencer Tunick in NewcastleGateshead broadcast on 17 July. The programme also featured a live installation created on the Gateshead Millennium Bridge later the same day - a new departure for the artist.
Spencer Tunick was born in Middletown, New York in 1969. He now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. he His installations include the Vienna Kunsthalle 1999, and Statements at Art 30 Basel 1999. Tunick has had exhibitions at I-20 Gallery, New York City; Art and Public, Geneva; and Hales Gallery, London. His works were recently acquired by the Dakis Joannou Foundation Collection in Athens, Greece. In June 2001, Spencer Tunick organised his first indoor installation with Site Santa Fe, New Mexico and was included in the 25th Sao Paulo Biennial in 2002. Tunick's recent installations and exhibitions include the Saatchi Gallery, London 2003; Moca Cleveland 2004; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo 2004 and the Lyon Biennial 2005. Spencer Tunick's next installation is a new commission by Museum Kunst Palast Dusseldorf, Germany.

The works in this exhibition are commissioned by BALTIC in collaboration with BBC THREE and supported by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, organisers of the Festival of Visual Arts.
