Gateshead Stars: Hill Top Specialist Arts College

Gateshead Stars: Hill Top Specialist Art College

Gateshead Stars is a community schools project led by BALTIC, which celebrates young people’s creativity and offers them an opportunity to work with a professional artist to realise their ideas. Our aim is to encourage pupils to recognise their talents, feel proud of their acheivements and unleash a sense of pride and accomplishment about their abilities. BALTIC is working with nine SEN Schools across Gateshead, showcasing the art works of one school every term.

This term we are showing working made by Hill Top Specialist Arts College. Hill Top Specialist Art College is in the process of building a new school and chose to use sculpture to represent the school’s past and future.

Working with artist Paul Merrick, pupils took part in experimental drawing, exploring new ways of mark making, before creating their own 3D sculptures. Using wire and wood to work with, pupils and their families created wire drawings and portrait sculptures that are diverse, creative and unique to them.
